About Me

Margaret A. O'Hara PhD A native New Yorker and New Yorker at heart, it is a privilege to serve fellow New Yorkers who can benefit from my services. Many of us in the field of counseling are “wounded healers.” We received help with our own challenges, which energized us to pay it forward. I am deeply grateful for the therapeutic support I received from New York clinicians and for the many colleagues and friends I have trained and collaborated with throughout the decades. This decade of my life my husband and I live in San Diego near our adult sons. Shortly after moving to California, I began online teaching at New York University. Though weather-wise I miss the four seasons, I get to ‘spring’ forward with each new group of school and mental health counseling graduate students I teach and ‘fall’ back as they bring forth their unique strengths and perspectives.

I love giving back to those in my beloved home state who need support. For this reason, I became board-certified in Telehealth years before the pandemic had us all working online. Leadership positions held in New York include the Division President of the Association of Specialists in Group Work for the New York Counseling Association and the three-year Presidential position sequence of the East End Counseling Association. It was through this organization that I was named “Counselor of the Year.” I was fortunate to support and be supported by many clients, students, families, mentors, and colleagues. Together we recognize the power of counseling to make a difference in so many lives…one at a time!

As a strengths-based therapist rooted in positive psychology and wellness, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to integrate techniques from narrative and mindfulness-based approaches. What this means is that we will use your strengths to expand what is right with you and to tackle your challenges in a caring, thoughtful way. Together we will apply strategies to reach the mental health, wellness, relationship, education, or career goals you set.

Sometimes people are uncertain about what therapy will be like or have concerns that are holding them back. If you are hesitant, give me a call and we can talk about where we would begin.
